Kids hear God's Voice
CJ Sautelle and Brooke Edmunds
Recently we have had the privilege of leading on a number of camps for kids in yrs 5 and 6; firstly as part of the Anglican initiative known as ‘Camp Pelican’ run over summer, and secondly through Brindabella Christian College in Canberra.
On Camp Pelican we were given the opportunity to run several workshops with the kids about how to hear God’s voice. Using Robert Holmes’ resources on teaching the prophetic for children, we introduced the different ways that God can speak to us, and gave the kids time to hear from God for themselves. It was truly exciting to hear the kids share about what God was speaking to them and doing in their lives. Over the last two days of the camp we got the kids to write down on butcher’s paper the things that God had been sharing with them over course of the week, with the idea of using that to create a song. Using what they had written as lyrics, we wrote the song ‘Your Wonders’, and performed it with the kids on the final day of the camp. It was a great experience to be able to help these kids connect with God in such a real and tangible way, and create something that will be special to them for a long time to come. We have also been able to use the song in a variety of contexts since to help other kids their age connect with God.
On the Brindabella yr 5/6 school camp we ran an evening session and were able to share with the kids about what it means to know God, giving them a challenge to seek God and respond to him personally in their lives. We then saw these kids connecting with God through prayer, writing, drawing and talking with the teachers and leaders on the camp in a time of reflection and response which lasted for over an hour (fairly impressive for a bunch of 10 and 11 year olds with supper on offer for those who chose to leave...) It was humbling to see God show up and connect with these kids individually in so many different ways, independently of anything we had really done. The willingness and hunger of these kids to know God and see him change things in their lives was amazing, and it was a joy just to be a part of it.
Editors note: Get ahold of the song they wrote as a result, it's right here in MP3 format! Great stuff guys
